SUMMARY:Sculpting Demonstration on September 10th
DESCRIPTION:Sculpting Demonstration  \nSeptember 10\, 2026 (this is the second week of September) \nDeidre demonstrates sculpting a portrait in clay and shows you that it is both fun and wonderfully meditative. In this demonstration\, the instructor will show step by step how we measure and prepare a blank and will show various stages of portrait sculpture from start to finish. We will cover how to set up properly and how to stay on track and troubleshoot anything that arises. \nThis should help anyone\, whether they are beginners or experienced in sculpting\, understand that it is not a stressful undertaking with a clear approach. We will also cover different tools and participants will be able to work on some of the demo pieces.

SUMMARY:Free Painting Demonstration with Cindy Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meetings and art demos are held at the Pitkin Community Center at 30 Greenfield St.\, Wethersfield on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm. Free to sponsors and the public. Demos follow a brief meeting. October’s demo will be a painting demonstration with Cindy Shaw. \n \n\n\n\n\nOriginally trained as an Architect\, Cindy worked for 16+ years on civic\, medical\, commercial and residential projects. She also taught Architecture\, Engineering and Interior Design to college students. \nWhen her husband’s career took them to rural Italy for 5 years\, Cindy began to paint. She enjoyed exploring the Italian countryside and capturing “le viste belle!” After returning to the USA\, she has continued her creative journey as a full-time impressionist and plein air artist over the past 15 yrs. \nPhilosophy and Inspiration:  \nCindy loves to spend time outdoors hiking\, paddling\, traveling\, and wildlife watching. It is where she draws her energy and inspiration. \nPlein Air painting allows Cindy to capture a scene\, soak in the sights and sounds\, and enjoy the time and place. “Being Present” is critical. She uses color and values to add depth and meaning. Her impressionist brushwork conveys energy and expression. \nHer goals are to present the subject within the natural or built environment – as one would “set the stage.” Then she works to engage the viewer\, not merely as an observer\, but as a player in the scene.

November’s demo will be a painting demonstration with Joan Harvey \nJoan will discuss why and how she transitioned from figurative painting to abstract. She will emphasis daily painting practice\, mark making and layering. \nArtist Bio \nJoan Harvey is an award-winning\, Connecticut-based abstract painter whose work explores tension\, movement\, and the beauty within disorder. She balances structure and spontaneity through layered compositions\, often using organic forms and circles. \n \nShe was awarded the Dorothy Alden Hapgood Award for “Embracing Chaos” at the 2026 Connecticut Women Artists (CWA) Members’ Juried Show. Harvey is also known for her Everywoman series\, exploring resilience and complexity in women’s lives.

DESCRIPTION:Mail checks to Wethersfield Art League\, 193 Wells Road\, Wethersfield CT 06109.  Include your phone number and email address.  Contact us with any questions:   WethersfieldArtLeague@gmail.com. \nSarah Baskin is an impressionistic watercolor and oil painter who lives part of the year in Sargentville\, Maine\, and the rest of the year in East Haddam\, Connecticut. \nSarah left her career as a lawyer to focus on painting after recovering from breast cancer and losing both of her parents. She started her painting journey in watercolor\, studying first in a weekly class with a Connecticut watercolorist and eventually in a six-month intensive virtual atelier course with Colorado watercolorist Dan Marshall. She also studied oil painting in workshops with Australian oil painter Colley Whisson\, Rockport\, MA artist Stapleton Kearns and California artist Tim Horn. \nIn each image she paints\, Sarah aspires to be a painter of light\, focusing on how the sunlight plays across the side of a building\, how it sparkles on the water and how shadows stretch across a landscape\, giving you the impression and atmosphere of a place\, not a photorealistic rendering of that place. Sarah loves painting outside en plein air in challenging conditions of changing light\, moisture\, wind\, heat and cold\, and the occasional passerby\, that force her to paint more quickly than she does in the studio and make her a better\, looser painter. She regularly participates in plein air painting competitions. In 2026\, Sarah was juried into the North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival in New Bern\, which took place in May 2026\, and the 10th Annual Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival\, which took place in Parrsboro\, Nova Scotia\, Canada\, in June 2026. In 2025\, Sarah was juried into the 9th Annual Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival. In 2024\, she won the best of Newburgh prize in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Painting Festival. \nSarah is an associate member of the Oil Painters of America\, the American Impressionist Society\, the National Watercolor Society\, the New England Watercolor Society and the Lyme Art Association\, an elected member of Connecticut Women Artists Inc.\, and a member of the Deer Isle Artists Association. \nSo far this year\, Sarah’s work has been juried into the Lyme Art Association’s Ship to Shore: A Marine Show and First Impressions 34th Annual Associate Artist Show. Her painting “An Afternoon on the Alamar” received an honorable mention in the Vehicle Category of the February/March Plein Air Salon Art Competition. Her paintings “At Rest\,” “The Muse of Rockport” and “Shimmering Evening” were also selected as finalists in that same competition. Her painting “At Rest” was also selected as part of the FAV15% (jury’s favorite 15% of the entries) in the March 2026 and January 2026 BoldBrush Painting competitions. \nIn 2025\, Sarah’s work was juried into the New England Watercolor Society’s 2025 New England Regional Juried Exhibition in Watertown\, MA\, and three exhibits at the Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme\, CT\, winning the Matilda Brown Memorial Award in the Ship to Shore Exhibition. Her painting “At Rest” was awarded the honor of Honorable Mention – Enthusiast Class by renowned watercolorist Thomas W. Schaller in the November 2025 BoldBrush Painting competition. “At Rest” was also selected as part of the FAV15% (jury’s favorite 15% of the entries) in the November 2025 and December 2025 BoldBrush Painting competitions\, and “An Afternoon on the Alamar” was selected as part of the FAV15% in the December 2025 BoldBrush Painting competition. Sarah’s painting “Earth Song” was also selected for the FAV15% in the August 2025 BoldBrush Competition. \nIn 2026\, Sarah was selected to participate in the Great Spruce Head Island Art Week. In 2024 and 2025\, Sarah was the November Artist in Residence at the Deer Isle Artists Association in Deer Isle\, Maine\, where she held a solo exhibition and artist talk. The work she submitted to the 2021 Hands on the Land: Art and the Environment in the Connecticut River Valley Exhibit was purchased by the Connecticut River Museum for its permanent collection.
