Wethersfield Art League History and Legacy

Local artists and art supporters founded the Wethersfield Art League in 1954. It has played a significant role in the cultural life of Wethersfield, helping to keep the arts vibrant in one of Connecticut’s oldest towns.

The Art League presented the need for an “arts program” to the Town Council, which approved the idea and requested the Town Manager to find suitable space. The town suggested the Little Red Schoolhouse on Wells Road because it was not in use for some time. The group identified their needs and established a working committee, and the town provided the school with a permanent residence.

The members started educational programs for adults and children, sponsored art shows and exhibitions, ran trips to art museums, and participated in special projects that benefited our local community. One such project involved restoring painted street sign houses mounted to wrought iron posts for Old Wethersfield. At that time, the league established scholarship awards for High School art students to help them pursue a career in art.

To accommodate a growing membership, monthly painting demonstrations and League meetings we moved to the Town Council Chamber. Art shows by member artists became an annual event and originally held in the Wethersfield Mall, at the Griswoldville Chapel, and currently at the Keeney Memorial Culture Center. The Pitkin Community Center provided the space for demonstrations that are free to the public.

Wethersfield Art League, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes awareness of and interest in the visual arts by sponsoring, organizing, and conducting demonstrations, exhibitions, and educational and instructional meetings, lectures, classes, and workshops. It focuses on the history and creation of artworks and provides an inviting social and creative venue for local residents interested in the arts. Over eighty-six artists and other members of the community sponsor the art league to offer low-cost classes and workshops, open studies, free plein air painting and free art demonstrations to the public.

We remain deeply committed to enriching the cultural life of Wethersfield and serving our community through the arts.
